Hysteroscopy

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows our specialists to view the inside of your uterus using a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. This procedure helps diagnose and treat a variety of uterine conditions without the need for large incisions, making it safer, quicker, and less uncomfortable than traditional surgery.

We offer both diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy to help manage conditions related to abnormal bleeding, infertility, and other gynecological concerns.

Why Choose Hysteroscopy?

  • Minimally Invasive: Performed through a small incision in the cervix, with no need for abdominal cuts.

  • Quick Recovery: Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two.

  • No Need for General Anesthesia: Often performed under local anesthesia or light sedation.

  • Reduced Risk of Complications: Lower risk of infection, bleeding, and scarring compared to traditional surgery.

  • Outpatient Procedure: Typically performed in our clinic, allowing you to go home the same day.

Types of Hysteroscopy

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy

This is a non-surgical procedure used to investigate symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, or infertility.
It allows us to

  • Visualize the uterine cavity and assess the endometrium (lining of the uterus).

  • Diagnose conditions like polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or uterine abnormalities.

  • Perform targeted biopsies if needed for further investigation.

When is it recommended?

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding (heavy, irregular, or postmenopausal bleeding)
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Infertility evaluations

Operative Hysteroscopy (Surgical Procedure)

Operative hysteroscopy is used to treat uterine conditions that may cause symptoms like heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, or infertility. During this procedure, small surgical instruments are passed through the hysteroscope to remove or correct issues.

Common procedures include

  • Polypectomy: Removal of uterine polyps that may cause irregular bleeding or infertility.

  • Myomectomy: Removal of small fibroids inside the uterus without affecting the outer uterine wall.

  • Endometrial Ablation: A treatment to destroy the uterine lining to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding (for women who do not want future pregnancies).

  • Adhesion Removal (Synechiae): Treatment of uterine scarring from previous surgeries or infections that can cause infertility or pregnancy loss.

  • Septal Resection: Correction of uterine septal defects, a common cause of recurrent pregnancy loss.

How Does Hysteroscopy Work?

Preparation

  • You’ll receive light sedation or local anesthesia to ensure comfort.
  • A speculum is inserted into the vagina, and the cervix is gently opened.
  • A saline solution is injected into the uterus to expand it, providing clear visibility.

Procedure

  • The hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
  • The surgeon views the uterine cavity on a monitor and uses small instruments to perform necessary treatments.

Recovery

  • The procedure usually takes 10-30 minutes, depending on the complexity.
  • You may experience mild cramping or spotting for a few days, which is normal.
  • Most women can return to normal activities within 24-48 hours.

Conditions Treated with Hysteroscopy

  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Irregular, heavy, or postmenopausal bleeding.

  • Uterine Polyps: Growths on the inner lining that can cause irregular bleeding.

  • Fibroids (Submucosal): Small fibroids within the uterine cavity that affect bleeding and fertility.

  • Adhesions (Asherman’s Syndrome): Scar tissue that can cause infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss.

  • Septal Defects: Uterine anomalies that may contribute to infertility or pregnancy complications.

  • Retained Products of Conception: Tissue left in the uterus after miscarriage or abortion.

  • Endometrial Hyperplasia: Thickened uterine lining that can cause heavy bleeding.
